Album de la semaine: Blu & Exile - Below the Heavens

Diction's review

@@@@

For the hip hop heads that are waiting for the mainstream to drop a classic, y'all gonna be waiting a long ass time. The best music is being released on independent labels like Stones Throw, Definitive Jux, Rawkus, Rhymesayers & for this one Sound In Color. This is where the real shit is at mostly and it flows under the radar of the average hip hop fan. You have to look for the good hip hop, but it ain't that hard to find if you are willing to put the effort to find it. Blu & Exile might not have an impressive track record but they really put alot of effort in this album. Exile has been making beats for years for his group Emanon, but he's only starting to get noticed with his own solo album last year. Production-wise this is some of the best beats he's done in his career, the beats are really impressive. Blu is a good MC, he's a down to earth normal guy MC. This MC/Producer collabo really feels like a modern Pete Rock & CL Smooth, they have great chemistry. I'm comparing them to a 90's group but in no way are they trying to recreate them, they really have their own unique sound. This is 2007 hip hop, this is west coast hip hop. While it stays true to the essence of beats and rhymes like it's been done for almost 30 years, there's quite nothing else that sounds like this. I'm proud of the new breed of producers that are stepping up and making great albums that are made to be listened from beginning to end. Nas put out a wake up call in late 2006, the underground soldiers are proving him wrong. "Below the Heavens" is the album I wished Common would have made... I feel the passion here. Definitely recommend to all hip hop fans, this is an album that shouldn't be slept-on. Don't be surprised if you start seeing more Exile in production credits, he could become a great producer.
