Album de la semaine: Cunninglynguist - Dirty Acres (Un des meilleurs album de 2007 que certains disent.)

Diction's Review

I have been a fan of Cunninlynguists since 2003 when I discovered with their 2nd album Southernunderground. They offered a humoristic hip hop with great production, which was diferent from the usualy southern hip hop that I was used too. Well they had more serious songs too but the album was pretty fun. The album was one of my favorite of that year and was a strong reason why underground hip hop was so strong in that year (Little Brother, Brother Ali, Louis Logic and many others helped alot too). I also went back and checked out their debut and to my surprise the production was quite diferent on that one. It was also excellent and it showed me how Kno could switch his style up. Then came the 3rd album in 2005 "A Piece of Strange" which showed much growth and maturity. Gone was the humor, every track was very serious now. Kno's production style switched up once again, going into a very smooth dark style. The album had such cohesiveness, it was very focused and excellent all the way trought. Poor promotion from the record label didn't help the record to reach the masses but it gained a strong following in underground circles becoming their most popular album. Now in 2007 they are back once again with another album that's diferent from the others. It builds on the dark smooth sound of "A Piece of Strange" and it takes it even further. The MC's are totally focused, both Deacon and Natti get equal rapping time now and even Kno drops a few rhymes. Don't expect anything that will make you laugh, they have become a conscious semi-political hip hop group now. The rapping is on a very high level, it's one of the things that keeps me going back to the album. The production from Kno is totally innovative, unique and outstanding. Every single is crafted perfectly and this album might finally rank Kno in the top hip hop producers rigth now. Their career was already impressive with 3 great albums under their belt, but I believe this one is the best one of them all. A group that never stops improving, this is a pretty close of being a masterpiece. Who said 2007 couldn't have any classic hip hop albums?

Album de la semaine: Percee P - Perseverance (Way better than Kanye or 50... cop this shit now!!!)

Diction's Rating

@@@@

I don't think any other title could fit better, Percee P has "Persevered" and finally put out his debut album after being in the rap game for 20 years. From the first single in 1988 to the various guests appearences over the years, this album has been a long time coming. He's not messing around either he hooked up with Stones Throw and Madlib to produce the entire album. This time Madlib is in "Boom Bap" mode, with simple hardcore beats to let Percee P go off. That doesn't stop Madlib from adding his innovative touch (Contra sampling!) but I would consider this one one of his "safer" projects. The beats are very dope, Madlib [dilla]that's whats up![/dilla]. For another year he keeps pouring out dope projects one after the other. Percee P rips all the beats with his rapid delivery reminiscent of Kool G Rap, very dope voice and flow. The album is straight forward hip hop, hardcore beats and rhymes. It stays true to the roots of hip hop but manages to be very current and fresh. The results are excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this album to any hip hop fan.

Album de la semaine: Y Society (Insight & Damu) - Travel at your Own Pace (Du vrai bon boom bap tel que vous l'aimez)

Diction's Review:

@@@@

Insigth is the most under-appreciated rap artist of the past few years. Every year he releases the sleeper of the year, starting from 2002's "Updated Software" up to Electric's album "Life's a Struggle" and his excellent "Blast Radius". 2005 & 2006 saw him release 2 japanese exclusive albums with his Solo Plexus project and the Shin Sight Trio project. Solo Plexus was Insight showing off his skills as 6 diferent MC's, while Shin Sight Tro was a more jazz-rap boom bap type of album. He dug up Shin-Ski for that one, a rather unknown japanese producer but with so much talent (as he displayed on the SST album). Y Society sees Insight once again hooking with an unknown producer, this time it's Damu the DJ from Panacea. That's rigth the DJ, not the producer. I don't know if I ever heard a Damu prior to this album. This guy might be unknown but his beats are fucking outstanding. Insight saw that and snatched him up I guess. This is another project where Insight doesn't produce, but once again I'm not dissapointed at all in the beats. The beats are thick & hard with dope basslines always and he compliments the tracks with dope scratching. A strong influence in funk and jazz, this would appeal to Tribe fans. Insight raps about everyday life type shit, he's easy to relate to. He's got excellent technique, a dope flow and I love his voice. The whole album has a really cohesive sound, especially with the little instrumentals to hold the tracks together (reminiscent of "Mecca & the Soul Brother"). All the songs are dope and Insight once again proves that he's the shit. Will people listen this time? Who knows... All I know is that I'm enjoying this album a whole lot.

Album de la semaine: Blu & Exile - Below the Heavens

Diction's review

@@@@

For the hip hop heads that are waiting for the mainstream to drop a classic, y'all gonna be waiting a long ass time. The best music is being released on independent labels like Stones Throw, Definitive Jux, Rawkus, Rhymesayers & for this one Sound In Color. This is where the real shit is at mostly and it flows under the radar of the average hip hop fan. You have to look for the good hip hop, but it ain't that hard to find if you are willing to put the effort to find it. Blu & Exile might not have an impressive track record but they really put alot of effort in this album. Exile has been making beats for years for his group Emanon, but he's only starting to get noticed with his own solo album last year. Production-wise this is some of the best beats he's done in his career, the beats are really impressive. Blu is a good MC, he's a down to earth normal guy MC. This MC/Producer collabo really feels like a modern Pete Rock & CL Smooth, they have great chemistry. I'm comparing them to a 90's group but in no way are they trying to recreate them, they really have their own unique sound. This is 2007 hip hop, this is west coast hip hop. While it stays true to the essence of beats and rhymes like it's been done for almost 30 years, there's quite nothing else that sounds like this. I'm proud of the new breed of producers that are stepping up and making great albums that are made to be listened from beginning to end. Nas put out a wake up call in late 2006, the underground soldiers are proving him wrong. "Below the Heavens" is the album I wished Common would have made... I feel the passion here. Definitely recommend to all hip hop fans, this is an album that shouldn't be slept-on. Don't be surprised if you start seeing more Exile in production credits, he could become a great producer.

Album de la semaine: Rugged Intellect - Renaissance Music (The Introduction) ("Un des releases les plus importants du hip hop anglais de montreal ever", comme dirait Diction)

Diction's review...

Lyrics: 4.0
Beats: 3.0

Poor Rugged Intellect, his album gets ripped the same day as Common and absolutely no one pays attention. Pretty much all the hip hop heads from Montreal have heard of Rugged Intellect, he's opened for alot of hip hop shows lately. What stands out the most with RI is his way of rapping, a fast delivery influenced by the likes of Kool G Rap, Nas & Big Pun. He can really rap his ass off with awesome technique. Normally hip hop albums from Montreal MC's don't have american featurings, but he reached out to many legends for this one. He's really put alot of effort for this debut album and it shows that he means business. My only problem with the album is the production which is not very innovative, just generic NY beats that have been made alot before. Some of them are tight, but a few could have been doper. While Rugged Intellect can rap very well, he's not very great for making hooks and many of the songs sound similar. There's definitely more than a few dope songs but overall the album is a little long. It's a decent album but it's not really up to his potential, I'm hoping for better production the next time around (if there is one...).

Album de la semaine: Wajeed presents The War L.P. ( DETROIT IN THE MOTHAFUCKIN BUILDING! )

Diction's review:

@@@@

Think Black Milk is the only "other" good producer from Detroit?Nope!Waajeed as been doing his thing for a while too, producing for Slum Village and his own group Platinum Pied Pipers. This album is an assault of that Detroit hip hop, only that rough & rugged sound pioneereed by J Dilla. The album is mostly instrumentals but there's a few featurings from his bling47 crew too. All the beats bang hard and are quite innovative and fresh. These beats bang the fuck out the MPC as Dilla would say. Waajeed doesn't mess around, he will quickly convince you that he's a great producer. While "Triple P" from the Platinum Pied Pipers featured a smoother soul vibe, this is the opposite with a total chaotic ambience. The whole album is great whether it's the mixed or unmixed version. I strongly recommend this to all Stones Throw and/or Detroit fans, this is some great innovative hardcore hip hop.

Album de la semaine: Talib Kweli - Ear Drum (En voilà un qui a appris de ses erreurs qui revient avec un excellent album)

Diction's review:

@@@@

Lyrics: 4.0
Beats: 4.0

I somehow didn't expect Talib to come back with some great shit after the dissapointing Beautiful Struggle. "Right About Now" & "Liberation" where signs he was back in the good direction but still I didn't expect much out of Eardrum. I was pleasently surprised straight from the first listen, this shit is really good. He hooked up with an incredible crew of producers (Madlib, Kanye, Pete Rock, will.i.am, Just Blaze, Hi-Tek) and they deliver the goods for Kweli to spit his raw heat. Kweli is focused on this, he does what he's supposed to do. He speaks on a whole variety of topics, this is political and human at the same time. He got he rid of his habit to abuse the word "like" which will please haters (altho it never really bothered me). You can feel the growth as an artist and this might be the album that will put him with the legends. There are no wack songs, this is an album that's playable front to back and I'm really proud of Talib Kweli for doing so. Eardrum defines what 2007 hip hop is... but where's the Dilla track?

Album de la semaine: KRS One & Marley Marl - Hip Hop Lives (C'est tout chaud, une réunion de 2 anciens du rap qui en fera sourire quelques uns et qui en fera pleurer d'autre...)

Opinion de diction....

@@1/2

Lyrics: 3.25
Beats: 2.5

KRS & Marley Marl squash their 20 year old beef and unite to bring the real hip hop back. After giving us 2 hot singles the album looked very promising but it fails to deliver the goods. The problems are from both artists. On one side you have Marley Marl who's one of the most influential producers of all time but who hasn't really been active in the past few years. He's got to adapt his style to the new styles of the ever evolving hip hop genre, but can't really seem to make good beats. Apart from a few songs the beats are terribly average. On the other side you have KRS-One who's arguably the greatest MC of all time, he's had one of the best careers and he's still active hot off a pretty good performance from last year's slept-on "Life". I was expecting an equal or superior performance, since he's got the peoples attention with this project, but instead KRS brings one his laziest performances of his career. He still goes on and on about what he did he was there, I am real hip hop, blah blah blah, he's getting a little repetitive... Of course there is a few exceptions like "Kill a Rapper" which is a great track about all the unresolved murders of rappers. "Rising to the Top" has KRS explaining his motives being the whole beef and how it was stupid. I like the honesty of a now older wiser man. But most of the rest of the album falls up short lyrically, too much braggin about past achievements, it's not bad but it's not really the reasons why I loved KRS in the first place. This is one of those albums that could have been great but just ain't... A major dissapointment from 2 of my favorite artists.

Album de la semaine: Marco Polo - Port Authority (Excellent album de ce beatmaker New Yorkais... Check it out!!!)

Diction's review... @@@@

Marco Polo is a canadian producer that now resides in New York. He's been coming up in the last few years with some beats here and there for various rappers but I think he really got noticed when he dropped 3 definitive bangers for the Boot Camp Clik last year. He makes some boom bap beats that really bring back the flavor of the mid 90's somehow similar to DJ Premier & Pete Rock. The production is bangin from start to finish, I really love his beats. The album has an all-star lineup with many dope featurings from old school legends to newer up & coming mc's. Marco Polo really brings out the best out of many mc's, "Get Busy" is the best Copywrite song I heard in a while, "Marquee" is the best O.C. song I heard in a while, "War" is the best Kardinal track I heard in a while, etc... This might be the album that brings back Rawkus as one of top underground hip hop labels again, this shit is really dope. Highly recommended to all hip hop fans of the world.

Album de la semaine: Polyrhythm Addicts - Break Glass

Diction's Review... @@@1/2

The Polyrhythm Addicts first appeared in the late 90's as a underground super group and dropped a very dope album called "Rhyme Related". The crew then consisted of DJ Spinna, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Mr. Complex & Apani B. Fly Emcee. Now 8 years laters the group re-unites but they have replaced Apani with Tiye Phoenix. At first I was a little dissapointed with the replacement but after listening to her verses on the album I quickly changed my mind. She spits really good and I think I actually like her better than Apani. DJ Spinna has experimented with a more electronic sound in the last few years but on this album it's the return to the straight boom bap NY rugged shit. The whole album is very cohesive with no soft shit allowed. I think it was about time that a New York group finally came out with an album that sounds like New York. It seems the whole city is too busy trying to immitate the south and forgot what made the city good in the first place. Mr. Complex & Shabaam are dope but it's really Tiye Phoenix who steals the show, but they just make a great team overall. Big up to the Polyrhythm Addicts for bringing back that real hip hop shit!

Album de la semaine: Brother Ali - The Undisputed Truth (Dope shit de votre albino favori)

Diction's review...

@@@@1/4

Lyrics: 4.5
Beats: 4.0

Originally slated for a late 2005 release this album was a long time in the making. Brother Ali wanted to make sure that he was delivering something as consistant as his last full lenght Shadows on the Sun. Once again he let ANT handle all the production, but that's a good thing since 1 producer albums are the best. Too many albums sound un-cohesive since the artist wants to work with everyone and make all types songs. The album is really all ANT and Brother Ali, there is not even 1 featuring. ANT constantly drops the goods he's a very underated producer, providing the dope beats behind Atmosphere for more than 10 years now. He doesn't show any weaknesses here, the whole album is filled with dope beats. Brother Ali is one of the most talended mc's in hip hop right now, he's got the soul of 2pac and the finesse of Kool G Rap. He's the type of MC that when he raps you simply have to listen to him, which is becoming a rare breed now. This album has a more mature feel than Shadows on the Sun you can see his evolution. He's divorced from his wife now and he talks alot about his personal life problems. Brother Ali is a very down to earth person, his songs are very honest and you can feel what he's saying. It's becoming a rare thing for hip hop albums to have a combination of great beats and great rhymes but the Undisputed Truth manages to excel in both categories. I love hip hop when it happens and I'm glad that artist like Brother Ali are keeping the art alive.

Album de la semaine: Devin the Dude - Waiting to inhale (Some dope south shit!)

diction's review:

@@@@

Lyrics: 4.0
Beats: 3.75

Devin the Dude has been in the rap game for a long time, he's appeared on countless albums from Dr. Dre to The Roots to De La Soul to Scarface. When you need a good hook you can count on Devin. He's released 3 dope albums so far that went unrecognized apart from his dedicated fanbase. You can always expect some smoothed-out beats with devin just rappin about bein broke, fuckin bitches and smoking weed. Devin has no lyrical abilities, he raps so slow like he smoked too much. What makes him so good is his funny lyrics and his addicting hooks. He's just a regular dude and he's easy to relate to his music. He knows how to pick good beats and simply has the ability to make good songs. He's the only rapper I know that has a love song about his marijuana plant! Waiting to Inhale is a great album to chillout to while smoking some weed and just takin' it easy. Devin is 4 for 4 as far as solo albums goes, he's a truly underapreciated rap artist that should be way more popular considering the quality of his music.

Album de la semaine: El-P - I'll sleep when you're dead (Avertissement: Cet album est très bizarre... for advanced listeners only)

@@@@

Lyrics: 3.75
Beats: 4.0

Is El-P a rap legend? He does have a great career with influential albums like Company Flow's "Funcrusher Plus" & Cannibal Ox's "The Cold Vein". He did change hip hop music now looking back at it. Funcrusher Plus is the root of all the "abstract hip hop" that came out in the past 10 years. El-P got his own unique way of rhyme blastin the listeners with a rapid delivery of hardcore rhymes. On this album El-P provides some truly chaotic beats, they are loud & distorted with offbeat drum patterns. Everything is blasted at you at a rapid pace, this is a very challenging album. It doesn't really get more hardcore than this. After a few listenings I found the album to be quite rewarding with all the details that are in the beats. They evolve with the song, this is executed with much finesse. This is the best album Def Jux have released in a while and I think it's this is the type of album that hip hop needs right now. Something that will get critical acclaim on an indie label that will reach good sales. I'm proud of El-P for this album, it's as good as his older stuff which hip hop veterans rarely get to do. This is definitely recommended to those who are tired of always hearing the same old same old, El-P is pushing the boundaries of hip hop with some very original shit. I'm ready to call him a legend now, he's accomplished enough to get the title.

Album de la semaine : Black Milk - By Popular Demand (Premier album de ce producer/mc de Détroit)

Diction's review

@@@@1/4

Lyrics: 3.5
Beats: 4.5

Black Milk is an up and coming MC/Producer from Detroit. He's mainly knowned for being part of B.R. Gunna who produced the last Slum Village album. His track record might be short but he already showed some signs of greatness. He's a student of the J Dilla school of production but he's not a clone at all. He does have a few similarities with him like innovative drums and the constant need to be original. The production is truly outstanding, all the beats are great and they are diferent one from the other. He can go from hard ass beats to clap drums and he seems to be mastering both sides. I can't stress enough how is production is good & original. He's an artist like Dilla, Madlib & Oh No, which still choose to make something that wasn't done before proving that hip hop can still be pushed forward. Black Milk ain't no slouch on the mic either, his subject matter is not the most original but he's got good presence and always sounds tight. If there's anyone that deserves the throne that Dilla claimed for greatest Detroit producer it's definitely Black Milk. This is an album that I highly recommend if you are looking for a great new artist and I'm pretty sure it will rank high on my year end list.

A nice little treat to start off 2007. Kweli & Madlib decided to put out this little album for free. The idea behind this is probably to promote both artists for their upcoming projects. This hit me up as a surprise cause I didn't know it was coming and Madlib is my current favorite producer. Kweli used to be a favorite too, but I haven't felt his latest releases as much as his old shit. I gotta admit on first listen I was kinda underwhelmed by this, but by the 2nd listen I was feelin it more. On the 4th spin now in the headphones and I'm lovin it. Madlib comes tru with some original shit as always and the beats are real nice. Kweli is no doubt a talented mc and I like him on this one. I dunno if more artists are gonna start giving out free albums, but hey I'm all for it. Dope music for free grab this now!
