Nas is technicaly the best rapper ever, he drops good albums but he just can't make that 2nd Illmatic that we know he's capable of. This album got dope lyrics, a few bangers and a few average cuts. It's the typical nas album. I'm feeling the hip hop is dead vibe of the album with him shouting out all the pioneers. Overall I think that this album is decent but not touching many of his other albums. But still this is one of the best mainstream releases of the year and easily superior to Kingdom Come.

Qui aurait cru qu'en 2006 Oxmo Puccino sortirait le meilleur album de sa carrière? Un album avec un concept qui marche, des bons rhymes et de la bonne production? Oxmo a vraiment reussi fort avec cette collaboration sur le label Blue Note. L'album a un vibe vraiment obscur jazz noir, avec de la production qui rapelle les beaux jours de MC Solaar. Les beats qui sonne comme du rap de 94 mais toujours en gardant un son innovateur. J'ai toujours aimer Oxmo comme MC, mais yavais souvent des problemes de production sur ses albums... c'est vraiment pas le cas ici. Les chansons s'enchaine une apres l'autre en continuant l'histoire. L'album est bon du debut a la fin, c'est dificile a croire que je dise ca d'un album de France en 2006. Tellement d'album de 2005 et 2006 de France qui son adapter au nouveau son commercial americain avec les maudits claps drums "je veut passer dans le club", si c'est pas ca c'est des clones de TTC. Lipopette Bar est vraiment un album unique, un album qui reste fidele au base du hip hop et qui est de l'art et non un produit jetable. Sans contredit Lipopette Bar est le meilleur album de rap francais de l'annee et je le recommande fortement a tout les fans de rap francais et de old school. Malheureusement l'album n'est pas disponible au Quebec pour le moment seulement en France, en esperant que ca va sortir bientot ici!

This album as the most impressive production lineup of the year. You got the Stones Throw crew (Madlib, Oh No, Dilla, DJ DJ Design) + some old DITC affiliates (Showbiz & Lord Finesse) and the European Tommy Tee. AG is a veteran, anyone who's familiar with the DITC crew know he is. Back in 92 he dropped the classic Runaway Slave with his partner Showbiz, then came a nice followup Goodfellas. His last album came out in 1999 it's been a long time since AG gave us any material. His rapping did stepdown a little from the 90's, he never was a lyrical genius but definitely held it down on the mic. The production is pretty good overall, there's a few really dope tracks and every song is listenable so overall good album.

Count Bass D is a veteran MC/Producer that is still pretty much unknown. His beats are the shit, they are innovative & old school. This albums doesn't really sound like his past material but it's really good, very unique. I'm quite satisfied with this one it does not dissapoint. Check this out if your a fan of producers like Madlib, MF Doom & Insight.

I wasn't expectin' much out of this release but they have managed to surprise me. Stoupe is back in good form with dope beats and Vinnie Paz is a little better than before... He's not that good of a rapper but you can see that he put a lot of effort in this one. Overall a pretty good album.

The Roots are back with their 7th studio album and now they are on the mighty Def Jam label. Thank god that Jay-Z let em have complete creative control, this album really feels like a complete work of art and nothing sounds forced. Like on every album, the always evolving band completely change their sound. This album is probably their darkest and most mature yet, Black Thought as an mc is always getting better and the music is getting more & more complex. The beats aren't some simple loops but rather some complete compositions. ?uestlove drums never sounded so hard, all of the music is perfect. I seriously can't find any flaws in the execution of this album, it just all flows so well and I want to listen to it on repeat. It's original, innovative, hard & dope. It might take a few listens to really get into it, but once you start noticing the little details in the beats and the flawless lyrics it really becomes an addictive listen. I've never heard anything like this, this is hip hop on another level, I'm calling it now album of the year and a future hip hop classic.

Here's a project from the local hip hop group Lyrical Assault. It's a collaboration album between 2 of the members Tolerance & Charley Brown. What's special is that Tolerance raps in English & Charley Brown is a French MC. The album blends the 2 languages of the Quebec culture into one hard hitting hip hop album. The album features production from a bunch of up & coming montreal producers, which do a pretty good job at it. But since there is so many producers, there is alot of diferent styles of beats which makes the album lack cohesiveness. The rhymes from Tolerance are excellent, he's a good mc with a fast-type delivery and on the other side there is the less serious Charley Brown which bring variety into the mix. Overall It's a pretty enjoyable hip hop album, and for montreal hip hop it stands as one of the best of the year.

A new project from Insight, teaming up with japanese artists Shin-Ski & DJ Ryow. Surprisingly Insight doesn't handle the production here, this has to be his first time not handling any of the production on one of his projects. The beats are from Shin-Ski, Insight raps and DJ Ryow provides the dope scratches. The production is very jazzy boom bap-ish circa 93-95 but still they keeps things original. The beats are all excellent, Insight is a good mc, this is another nice addition to his already excellent discography. I swear Insight has got to be the greatest "unknown" hip hop artist of the last few years, he keeps droppin dope albums. Sadly just like the excellent Solo Plexus project this is a Japan only release, not enough people will get to hear it.

A nice comeback album with a very impressive production lineup, I like how they hooked up with some underground producers (9th wonder, marco polo, Illmind) & some veterans (pete rock, large professor, beatminerz). This is a straight up rugged NY shit album similar to their 90's stuff but adadpted to today's sound. Dope stuff
