Album de la semaine: Black Milk - Tronic (L'album de l'année à date selon Diction, ce n'est pas peu dire...)

Diction's review: @@@@

Oh Wee!!!

Now this is an album that lives up to expectations. Black Milk for president! Just last year he was "the new Detroit producer" to most but with Popular Demand being one of the highlights of 2007 he made a name for himself and he's been constantly dropping projects non-stop since, from Caltroit to producing whole albums for Fat Ray and Elzhi. He's often criticized for being a Dilla clone but he's just building off his sound like about half of the producers in the hip hop industry. Anyway being Dilla influenced is a good thing in my book, cause these producers are more eager to innovate than just trying to recreate some '94 DJ Premier style beats. The main difference in production style between Tronic and Popular Demand is that he's messing more with synths this time around, kinda like Dilla was doing on some of the tracks on "Welcome to Detroit". The production on the album is absolutely ridiculous, the beats are very hard and full of details, the whole album is just bangin' to the fullest. Black Milk caught a lot of flak for his rapping on the previous album, but I thought he was dope and was definitely feeling his style. Producer rappers always get over-criticized when it comes to their rapping, they'll never catch a break with the usual "stick to making beats". However, Black Milk really stepped up his rapping for this album, he's really mastering his flow now and he just spits some ill shit. He ain't about no complex storytelling or anything overly conscious, it's just some raw lines one after the after. I wasn't expecting Black Milk to drop one of my favorite LYRICAL performances of the year, but the cat just has many surprises in his bag. This album is thoroughly excellent, definitely one of my favorites of 2008 and one that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to any hip hop fan. Make sure to play that shit loud as fuck so it can destroy your eardrums. BLACK MILK BLACK MILK BLACK MILK BLACK MILK BLACK MILK BLACK MILK BLACK MILK.

Album de la semaine: The Mighty Underdogs - Droppin Science Fiction

Diction's review

@@@1/2

Here we have a new collaboration between The Gift of Gab, Lateef and Headnodic (of Crown City Rockers) who all hooked up to create a hip hop album. It's a nice change of pace from the last Blackalicious album which was trying a little too hard at crossing over, this one is a more straight forward affair. There's a nice chemistry between Gift of Gab and Lateef, both MC's trade verses pretty well and it really sounds like they were meant to rap together. On the production side Headnodic brings a much different sound than Chief Xcel, it's hard to really break down his production style because he uses a bunch of different style of beats but the whole project does have a cohesive feel. The rhymes are pretty tight (altho Gift of Gab doesn't really go off), the beats are pretty good so on the whole I'd say that this is a pretty nice album. If you are a fan of the old Quannum material, I think this one is worth checking out because it brings back their style while updating it a bit too so it doesn't sound like the same shit but less effective.

Album de la semaine : J-Zone presents Chief Chinchilla - Live @ the Liqua Sto (Un album humoristique trop dope!! On est vendu aux beats de J-Zone)

diction's review:

@@@1/2

Yay!!! J-Zone hasn't retired after all, he's still here to bring some much needed humor into the hip hop game and this time he's brought his sidekick Chief Chinchilla from the Gator$-n-Fur$ show. This Chief is actually J-Zone with a modified voice sort of like Madlib and his Quasimoto alias, except that Chinchilla is much nastier than J-Zone himself. The whole album is based around St. Ides malt liquor, it's all little songs like the old commercials the rappers used to do in the mid 90's. The whole thing is absolutely hilarious, Chief Chinchilla really kicks some of the funniest stories and it really makes me laugh on every spin. The whole thing is produced by J-Zone and he drops some dope beats, his usual fucked up style and it works just as well for the Chief. What's fun about this is that with the Chief alias, J-Zone can really push his humor further by saying some really nasty shit that he wouldn't normally say. Overall this is a very well executed project, it's just very fun to listen and it's great to have J-Zone back.

Album de la semaine: DJ Revolution - King of the Decks (Du bon hip hop underground avec plein de scratch et des bons featurings, Check this out!)

Diction's Review:

@@@

Ah the DJ... With each passing year, it seems like the DJ seems to be less and less part of the hip hop culture. When is the last time you heard scratches on a mainstream single? If it wasn't for underground hip hop keeping the basics alive, there wouldn't anyone putting scratches in their hip hop. Turntablism seemed to be a pretty big thing back in the late 90's, but that also slowly died down and I can't remember the last album of pure scratching that I listened to. It's a good thing that we have DJ Revolution to keep the art of scratching alive as he showcases more than enough on his new album. The album is a producer with featurings concept but every track has DJ Revolution scratching his ass off. The beats have a traditional "boom bap" sound, giving the album a really "back to the basics" feel. It's not really that original, but it's good to have some of that good ol' hip hop like we used to have and it's cool with all these guests and scratches. The battle with Spinbad at the end is particularly entertaining. It's not really one of the essential albums to get in 2008, but I can't say that it wasn't fun listening to this so it's at least worth checkin' out.

Album de la semaine: Moka Only - Clap Trap (tiré de sa série d'album qui sort cette année. Des bonne petites tracks! Check this out)

Nous serons de retour autour du 24 septembre!

Diction's review

@@@1/2

Well considering that no one gave a fuck about 2007's Vermillion except me, I guess I can consider myself a Moka Only fan. I really don't mind his abstract laid-back delivery, it's rather fresh and unique to me. Yeah sometimes it sounds like he's just mumbling out his words but it works perfectly on this type of production. Moka Only is a very underated producer, he puts out so much work a year and he's not stuck up on that old "90's" sound even if he's a veteran from that era. His beats could easily pass off as the newest Oh No or Madlib productions, it's totally up to date with the sounds that I'm digging currently. This "Clap Trap" follows a concept of short songs where none of the 22 songs are longer than 2:22 minutes and it works well as he's just throwing one idea after the other. I wasn't even sure if I dug this on my first spin but something just clicked on that 2nd spin and I'm really diggin it. I think it's cause I wasn't playing loud enough, there's more details in the beats to be unveiled when you turn that shit up. As usual people are gonna nitpick shit against Moka, so I'm totally prepared to be the only one giving this album props. But really it's the shit!

Album de la semaine: Madvillain - Madvillainy 2 (du Madlib qui remix Madvillain à sa façon pour une 2e fois. 125$ pour l'édition spéciale sur le site de Stones Throw)

Diction's review

@@@@@

Lyrics: 4.5
Beats: 5.0

Now there are remix albums and there are remix albums by Madlib. Just like we've witnessed with the Perseverance Remixes, Madlib doesn't remix things like your typical producer. He totally deconstructs his own work and creates something totally new with it. Now the original Madvillain album was already something totally different for hip hop when it was released, and quite possibly one of the weirdest things I ever heard at that point. I remember my first listen of the original Madvillain, It really threw me off like what the fuck is this shit but there was something that just made me listen to it 3 times in a row as I knew this was some other shit. But now 4 years later the album is a reknowed classic and even used to introduce people to hip hop music, something that the duo probably would never have expected to happen. After listening to this remix album, I have to say that the original feels very "normal" as this is even more "out there" than you can possibly imagine. Madlib doesn't just drop "new" beats over the accapellas, he built a whole new album with the vocals. The tracks aren't in the same order at all, the album is deconstructed and rebuilt with a new vibe, new skits, new interlude beats and the album is just a whole different thing. The only thing in common with the first one is that it has the same vocals, but even there the new beats just give these vocals a new feeling. The production is absolutely totally fuckin nuts, this is absolutely one of the best produced albums I ever heard and just makes classic hip hop albums feel some simple and dated. Madlib is running this hip hop shit, he once again redefines what can be done with hip hop beats and at this rate he'll be the greatest producer of all time. Some people still hold RZA and DJ Premier on a higher pedestal, but to me it's been a long since Lib has exceeded them cause they simply fail at innovating. I think that the people that are comparing the individual songs with the originals are doing something wrong because Madvillainy was never much of a "singles" album. It was an album that built its strength off the cohesion between the tracks and how it worked as a complete work, not how such and such track were bangers. The remix album is the same in that sense, it works as a complete album. I don't even wanna compare both albums, they are just 2 of my favorites of all-time and totally different. I've only had this album for 3 days but it's taken over my life, it gives me goosebumps and at the time I'm writing this I've already played it 9 times and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Hip Hop can die, I don't care as long as Madlib keeps on dropping 4 albums a year I'll be fine.

Album de la semaine: Invincible - Shapeshifters

Diction's review:

@@@1/2

Lyrics: 4.0
Beats: 3.5

The fist time I heard Invincible was in 2005 at the jazzfest where the Platinum Pied Pipers were performing a free show. They brought their extended family and this included Invincible who was ripping verses while Waajeed was pumping beats out of his MPC. Waajeed then mentioned that Detroit had the hottest beats and at that time I didn't understand what he meant cause J Dilla was pretty much the only other producer from the D that I knew. He was right tho, cause now in 2008 no one is really fucking with the Detroit sound. It's the most original and effective sound, Detroit is where it's at. For her debut album Invincible brought a 100% Detroit sound as this is what she reps. There's a few beats by Black Milk and there's a few beats by Waajeed but everybody brings some dope shit and I'm especially impressed by the work of the Lab Techs (Athletic Mic League). The beats are phat and just up to date with what's happening, not lost on that 03' Kanye West sound like too many acts to count. Invincible might be a girl (lesbian too?), but she's just in a league of her own when it comes to rapping. Her flow, technique and wordplay is nearly flawless, she's just really good at rapping. She's got punchlines like: "I'm striving to be one of the best period, not just one of the best with breast and a period" but she's also got a political edge which makes the song very interesting to listen to on top of the dope beats. This is some of that '08 hip hop for dat ass, a record not to sleep on if you plan on complaining that the year was shit in december.

Album de la semaine: Dagha - The Divorce (Du bon shit underground dans le style de Shinsight Trio. Check this out!)

I feel that this album is talking to me a little as I can relate to is so much. Not that I ever got married and divorced but I'm in my mid 20's and looking forward to buying a house and finding that special girl who will eventually have a child with me. I thougth the last girl was the right one for me, but after 3 years she didn't really feel the same way. I see "The Divorce" as me in 5 years if the next relationship blows to bits after going tru the house/kids part, as if Dagha is warning me about those things. Cause this album is pretty much only about his relationship with his past wife, sort of the hip hop version of Marvin Gaye's "Here My Dear". I don't know if all this is true or if he's just a good liar but anyhow he works this concept very well. The production is some of that old school boom bap produced by Insight and DJ Real, with the jazzy type beats and full of scratches quoting stuff about relationships and divorce. Even if all the songs are negative and he's just talking about depressive situations, the album still keeps a "feel good" vibe that makes it very enjoyable. Overall it's a dope album, Dagha has been consistant so far on all his projects and I don't think this is the last we'll hear from him. I'm not too sure if everyone will be able to sit through all this whinning and nagging, but to me it's fresh and original cause I can't really think of any other hip hop album like that. Well maybe Misery Loves Comedy from Louis Logic but even there these are 2 very diferent albums. If your a fan of Insight well there are good chances you will also dig Dagha, as both have similar rhyme styles and beats.

Album de la semaine: The Roots - Rising Down (Je laisse Diction en parler:)

Well this is about to be my most negative 4 star review I ever dropped. At the same time I love and hate this album. I love what ?uest is doing with the production, once again changing his drum style and just going in a direction that The Roots have never been to. I love that dark gutter sound and mixed with those synths from hell it gives the album an incredible sound overall, it's really well executed. I'm dissapointed that they didn't make another album with the Game Theory sound (which in my opinion is the greatest Roots sound so far), but The Roots making the same album twice would break the purpose of the group. We are so far from the sound of Organix/DYWM and even more recent works of Things Fall Apart and Phrenology, even those are "old school" for The Roots now. The major thing that bothers me with the album is the abundance of guests. It seems that on every song there is an unecessary guest. I know they aimed for a "posse" political rap album, but the results are that the songs have no personality. When you have one of the best MC's of all time in your group, you should be letting him rap more. Especially how he murdered the 2 last albums, he just seemed to be getting better and better. It pisses me off to have to hear all these guest rappers, they really come off lazy and really don't push the songs to the next level. Well I feel it's good to hear Mos Def start things up after the depressing intro, but Styles P's presence just fucks up the song with his wack claritin rhymes. I really feel like telling Peedi Peedi to shut the fuck up on "Get Busy", I was feelin him last time around but he just feels out of place here. Even old crew favorites like Dice Raw and Malik B come off a little sloppy, I don't sense the passion they had in the past. The new affiliates from Game Theory also show in abundance, they aren't awful but I don't really like them more than that. The worst guest spot has got to be Wale on "Rising Up", he fucks up a track that could have been an album highligth... but still I kinda love this album cause the production work is so damn nice. I guess I was too greedy with my expectations, I feel that the group could have released a much better album if they had focused harder. For a political album the songs are a little pointless, the whole album feels like a messy affair. Plus you had ?uestlove fronting like this was the best Roots album to date, I had that little expectation in me that maybe it could actually match Game Theory. It's pointless to compare it to that album because Game Theory is just superior in every aspect. Whenever I play the album, there isn't a moment where I'm saying "Shit I can't wait to hear this verse!", there's only "Criminal" that is on the standard classic roots standard. Please ?uestlove before letting someone rap on a Roots album, make sure he's gonna come as tight or better than Black Thougth. Just imagine if Paid in Full had 15 guests spots, it wouldn't be really on the same level. Also next time put more hidden details in those beats, I already feel like I've memorised everything within just a week of listens. Why am I complaining tho, this album is still the shit!

Album de la semaine: Kool G Rap - Half a Klip (Une légende du rap qui sort un album phat? Nice!)

@@

1st listen: YES NEW G RAP!!!... damn it's short
2nd listen: The beats could have been better
3rd listen: His rapping ain't as good as before

Well that about sums it up. Fans like me have been waiting for 6 years for some new Kool G Rap material and all we get his some little ass EP. It's true that Illmatic only had 9 songs but it was just classic after classic with much cohesiveness, 2 things that can't be said about "Half a Klip". Classic songs? None. Filler? Yes, especially "Turn It Out" which sounds like a G-Unit reject. The EP has no cohesion it's just one random song after the other, it doesn't have a flow or a purpose it's just new G Rap songs. That could be fine I guess if he had picked some better beats, but his beat selection is a little weak and there is absolutely no evolution since the "The Giancana Story". All these songs sound like they could have been released in 2001, it's not really my dream G rap for 2008. Fuck Premier and Marley Marl, he should have gotten some Waajeed chaotic War beats. Now that would have been a classic! There are parts where he runs out of breath, he's not rapping at his best here. As it shows on "With a Bullet" which is a remix from one of his 92 tracks, it's easily the best track with his old school awesome flow from the classic "Live and Let Die". There are some parts where he shows signs of greatness and his natural talent/voice automaticly makes him decent but it ain't the same old G Rap. But hey he's a 20 year old veteran, so why should anyone have any expectations? Actually I can't wait for the 2 KRS-One albums coming out soon, I guess I can never let go off my legends even if they always dissapoint.

Album de la semaine: Connie Price & The Keystones - Tell Me Something (Un album funk à saveur hip hop avec plein de featurings qui faut pas que vous manquiez. Check this out)

Diction's review

@@@1/2

I always wanted to check out this group's debut album ever since I found out they where all over Madlib's Sound Direction LP. I still haven't got around to listening to their debut but this new album is a very nice way to kick things off in 2008. Connie Price & the Keystones are among this new wave of "funk-revival" bands that stay true to the original sounds of funk music. I can't really compare it to their first LP yet, but one obvious difference is the presence of rappers on almost every single track. Tha band brings the funk while the rappers rap. It could almost be considered as a hip hop album since the beats have a strong hip hop feel, but then funk and hip hop always been related. The rappers do a decent job but the one who steals the show is Big Daddy Kane on the opening track "Across the Board". To put it plain and simple, he totally kills that beat and it makes me wonder when we will finally get another BDK album. The album is a little short at 32 minutes but it's only filled with dopeness so the small length doesn't really matter. Funk and hip hop fans don't miss out on this one!

Album de la semaine: Atmosphere - Strictly Leakage (Dans la lignée des albums gratuits...Check this out!)

Diction's review

@@@1/2

Lyrics: 3.75
Beats: 3.5

A nice christmas present from Atmosphere, "Strictly Leakage" is a free download only album that consists of outtakes from the next album "When Life Gives You Lemons". They must have recorded a ton of songs, since in 2007 they also released 3 EP's of songs that where also not gonna make the next album. Slug must have kept his introspective stories for the album cause this is mostly him acting like an asshole over boom bap beats. That's fine with me cause he does that very well and ANT drops some bangers as usual. This is a dope album and if it's the stuff that's not good enough for "Lemons" then I think we are gonna get a great album from Atmosphere in 2008.
