Album de la semaine: Mr. Chops - For Pete's Sake

@@@1/2

Instrumental hip hop covering instrumental hip hop? What the fuck? Yeah... and the weirdest thing about it is that it actually works. Mr. Chop (who's a name I don't know much about, but he's got some producing credits on the last MF Doom album) reworks some of the classic Pete Rock beats and makes something totally new out of them. Most of the time it's even hard to recognize what song he's covering (well not looking at the song titles and all), they usually have the same common sample but he just goes totally elsewhere with it. Have to love this mans drums, really hard and dark, there isn't a single beat on the album that doesn't hit the spot. Of course most of them aren't touching the originals, but then again what does, it doesn't really matter cause I never get the feeling that I should be listening to Pete Rock instead of this. Mr. Chop really succeeded at trying out this innovative concept, I'm sure Pete Rock himself would be proud of the end results of this record... One of the good instrumental joints of the year, definitely worth getting.

Album de la semaine: Sole & The Skyrider Band - Plastique (Weird)...

@@@1/2

Anticon is a bunch of pretentious bullshit but once in a while they do come up with something that's good, and most of the time it's from Sole. The first Sole & The Skyrider Band album was one of my favorite releases of 2007, it was a unique twist on where hip hop could be taken and it worked out wonderfully. This follow-up picks right up where the debut left, it's still dark and apocalyptic and with highly negative topics. Sole really masters the depressive paranoiac raps like no one else, he's highly skilled and this style really fits perfectly over the Skyrider Band's almost post-rockish music. At times it feels like this is the result of what it would sound like if someone rapped over Godspeed You Black Emperor. The words really escape when me when trying to describe what's happening in the "beats", it's really some original stuff that no one really attempts to do. I still think the first album is a little superior, this misses the "oh wow, this actually works" factor and the productions aren't really as powerful... But this is really good stuff anyhow and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to the fans of the first album. Easily one of the most original hip hop LP's of 2009 (that doesn't suck), definitely worth checking for the hip hop fans who aren't afraid of something a little different.

Album de la semaine: Murs & Slug - Felt 3

@@@1/2

Well I wasn't too sure on my first spin what to think of this, but after giving it a little more time I'm really digging this. The first thing to take into mind is that it's not Felt 2: The Sequel, it's really something else totally. With Aesop Rock on production, this is like an Aesop Rock album with different rappers. Even Murs & Slug aren't rapping like they usually are as it might seem that they are "lazy" at first, but really they are just trying something new and having fun with it (Get Cake? lol!). Seems rather a weird concept to do over some of those Aesop Rock beats but shit works fine when you accept this for what it is... Actually I'm really digging his beats, just like his music it requires more than the initial spin to catch everything that it going on. I'm not really surprised that it's throwing a lot of fans off cause whenever artists try to do something different in hip hop they usually get shitted on (not that I'm not guilty of this too), but hey I think it actually works out fine this time around. Very raw beats and raw rapping, pretty cool stuff and I can picture this growing on me even more with given time.

Album de la semaine: D. Black - Ali'yah

Normally, I probably would have skipped an album from such an unknown MC, but after hearing one of the songs from the album I just had to check it cause it showed mad potential. And I'm very glad that I did, because this album is really good and it's a nice reminder of just how ill Vitamin D and Jake One are as producers. D. Black is an up and coming MC from Seattle and that's why you see the connection with the city's finest producers in there, although there is a few other names that I'm not familiar with (B. Brown, GMK and Kuddie Mak). Overall the production on this is very nice, really a modern hip hop sound that I can really get down with and just grabs me instantly. Pretty much every beat here is on point and the album has a good cohesive sound which makes it a pretty nice listen. D. Black is definitely above average, his style is semi-conscious but I feel that he's missing a little bit of mic presence for him to be truly great... It's not that what he raps about is not interesting, he's perhaps just missing a little bit of emotion. I guess it's just a small criticism cause I still dig him and the album is very good anyway. It's sad that the album will be totally slept-on since the only thing he's got for a little hype is 3 Jake One beats, but that's the reality of most underground MC's in 2009.

Album de la semaine: Fashawn - Boy Meets World (Review à venir...)

@@@@

Just a few weeks ago, I had no idea who was Fashawn... And now he's got one of the best hip hop joints of the year. I love hip hop when it surprises me like that, finally some impressive young blood to take over the washed up veterans. Well Fashawn is not the only who deserve props here, he's pretty much getting a buzz only because Exile is producing the entire album. Yep just like he did with Blu 2 years ago, Exile is once again bringing up some "new" cat in the game and giving him a cohesive set of beats. One thing that I'm loving about Exile is that his projects are pretty different, the beats here don't sound like "Below the Heavens" much and it's also quite different from his solo instrumental project "Radio". Versatility is often underrated aspect of producers, I really like when they can do various types of things and not always repeat the same formula. Not that Exile is particularly innovative here, he pretty much gave Fashawn some very basic hip hop beats for Fashawn to lay his stories on, but they are of very high quality and have a very cohesive sound throughout the album. On to Fashawn he might be new but he shows incredible potential on this first album, he's got some pretty nice skills but it's really what he says that makes him great. The concept of the album is pretty much about growing up and becoming a man, and well that's what Fashawn mostly raps about and he makes quite interesting. There's a strong soulful feeling to it all, it's just easy to feel what he's rapping about and get into his reality. Of course cats are gonna compare him to Blu since there's the connection with Exile, but I feel that both MC's are different and each one really got their own style (but then again I would recommend this to the fans of Blu & Exile). Overall this is a very great complete album, absolutely awesome from front to back (and what a closer!), definitely creeps up unexpectedly in the best hip hop joints of 2009 and really deserves all the props that it's getting.

Album de la semaine - Crown City Rockers - The Day After Forever

@@@1/2

About damn time!!! It's already been 5 years since CCR's last album and I don't know why it took so long. Both Rashaan Ahmad and Headnodic have had their side projects, but now it's now the time for them to unite again and they are really good together. Ahmad just feels at home over these productions, I'm definitely feeling him more here than his solo from last year. His rapping style is quite simple and basic, but I don't know his positive style just fits perfectly over these beats... It's like I really get into the beats and then the way he raps over them is just what we call synergy. The production is quite varied by I absolutely love it, some songs have some masterful usage of synths, it's quite hard to pull off that sound and do it well but Headnodic and co really do it well right here... Plus there some other songs that just feel like modern Tribe, with some of those sick ass drums. It's a sort of a "feelgood" throwback joint but at the same time it's very innovative in the production department which makes this a quite good album to listen to. Quite short at 41 minutes (especially with a 5 year wait!), but most everything is dope and it just flows together wonderfully.

Album de la semaine: Oh No - Ethiopium

Diction's review: @@@1/2

Well I think it must be said that Oh No simply can't do no wrong, but damn I was hyped as fuck for this release expecting a possible classic like Dr No's Oxperiment but it's not really as tight as that. But it's still tight don't get it wrong, it's just not mindblowing as the idea could have been. See this time around the choice of samples is Ethiopia. Now for those who listen to African music, most of y'all know that the ethiopiques series is the absolute shit, the country has a very deep and varied musical scene. Kanye already used one sample from there for Common's "The Game" and it turned out pretty good... But you know just the thought of Oh No using some Mulatu Astatke or Mahmoud Ahmed gave me goosebumps and shit. The possibilities where just endless for this project but in the end it just doesn't hit the retarded status that I hoped for. It's funny being a little disappointed with what I consider a very good album, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this album and it's tight for sure. Oh No for the past few years has really started to build up his own unique sound and while he still isn't that far from his brother Madlib, both are really starting to go in their own paths. One of the things I like the most about Oh No is his drum sounds, he really does it well and it's always innovative. He keeps it dope without never really hitting the 90's cliches. I guess I just over-hyped myself to this project and that's my own fault, but still this is definitely worth checking out and Oh No remains a leading producer in hip hop.

Album de la semaine: Brother Ali - US

Diction's review: @@@@

"I started rhyming just to be somebody... I found out that I already was"

Brother Ali has so much soul. This is what I would call reality rap. No not like what Ice Cube was doing at all, but just a man who speaks about his life and what happens into it. Nothing about crack or pimping hoes, his life is pretty much as normal as it can get and it had regular problems. Well despite that he's a white muslim albino, but all that doesn't really matter very much. With his first proper album "Shadows on the Sun", Ali was really more focused on impressing people with his rapping technique and skills. The people really noticed that he had skills but it's with his 2nd release "The Undisputed Truth" that he really got more personal in his stories. This one goes even further in that direction, it definitely has less of his technique but much more feeling. I'm pretty sure he could have continued to go in the direction that SOTS was, but I really appreciate his evolution and where he's taking his music to. I just can't help but to feel the man when he speaks, his rapping really drags you into the songs and you have to pay attention to every word he says. It is easily my favorite rapping performance of the year, even is it's not that impressive on the technical side it doesn't matter because he's rapping about something that actually matters. The production from ANT is alot smoother than what he usually does, the beats have a more soulful feel to match with what Brother Ali is doing and they really fit perfectly. Overall it is really a great album, it looks like Brother Ali is gonna be able to pump out those for a long time coming, he's slowly etching himself as one of the great rappers.

Album de la semaine: KRS-ONE & Buckshot - Survival Skills

@@@1/2

Well it took Duck Down for KRS to release a good album again. This is something I was not expecting in 2009, but this shows that all he needed was fire beats for him to sound good again. Both MC's are far from their prime of course, but getting together was a good move for both of them. Buckshot can get redundant when he handles an album by himself and KRS sounds a little insane these days, but really these problems are nowhere to be found on this album. The many collaborators also help, every single guest is on point and really add something worthwile to the album, but really the greatest asset of the album is the production team. From Khrysis, Illmind, Black Milk, Marco Polo and 9th Wonder just to name a few of the highlight names, this album has really some fire beats to help both veterans shine again. Overall it's a damn fine album and perhaps the surprise of September, I don't think it's the most impressive album lyrically (both enjoy the performance since I'm a fan) but this to me definitely has better beats than the other recent albums from the New York veterans and that makes it the better album.

Album de la semaine: Dynas - The Apartment

It's funny when I first saw the producer lineup for this album, I sort of made a joke that this would be a better album than Cuban Linx II... Well the joke is on me because I actually feel that way. I don't expect many others to feel like me, but this right here has all beats that I dig from a wide range of modern producers that aren't really in the "generic" zone... Cmon just look at the list: Mphazes, DJ Jazzy Jeff, S1, Illmind, J Dilla, DJ Spinna, Exile and Khrysis... What the hell more can you want? The only thing is missing is a good MC to spit over these beats and I'm feeling this Dynas dude. I wasn't really familiar with him previously, only heard him over a few guests spots but he's pretty good. What he raps about is mostly real man type shit, lyrics that aren't too hard to relate to and he's got a good delivery on top of it. Overall a very good album without one weak track, it's unfortunate that it got ripped in the wrong week with all the attention going at Raekwon and Jay-Z, it looks like most hip hop fans will miss this one.

Album de la semaine: Dudley Perkins - Holy Smokes

@@@1/2

Dudley Perkins offers a nice spaced out trip with his 3rd album released under his birth name. Unlike the 2 first which were produced by Madlib, this one has all the beats handled by his frequent collaborator Georgia Anne Muldrow... While her music is mostly rooted into soul, she definitely shows here that she can drop beats for a hip hop artist without sounding out of her zone at all. It's funny talking about a female hip hop producer, it's more than just a male-dominated area as there is simply no other girls handling beats or at least I can't think of any since Silvia Robinson and that's going way back! Georgia's beats are like George Clinton meets Dilla, I can't really describe them in any other way and there are just a perfect match for Dudley who is already a rapping George Clinton. His subject matters revolve around funk, love, peace, he gets political at times too... but the guy really sounds like he's floating in space, very high on lots of weed. That's cool tho, I love Dudley, I dig his style and he's just the shit. Really nice work from Georgia on the beats too, a good dose of modern head-nodders that are mostly all good. This is probably an album that's just for the people who were already fans of both, but hey I am!

Album de la semaine: La Coka Nostra - A Brand you Can Trust

Diction's review

@@@

Well this actually much better than expected. I just didn't believe much in the chances of this collaboration working out... House of Pain are beyond washed up, Ill Bill gets on my nerves with his forced "bad" voice and Slaine is alright I guess but he's not good enough to make a difference. What's surprising is the production which works out pretty well, it's a nice dose of heavy beats mixed with a little bit of rock elements here and there. The whole thing is very cohesive and makes a good enjoyable listen, I just wasn't expecting this. Even Everlast who'd I expect to fuck shit up comes correct, his rapping style is similar to what he used on "A Prince Among Thieves" and "The Platform" guest spots about 10 years ago. Even when he gets his singing on, it just works out fine and fits pretty well with the vibe of the album. Nothing really revolutionary (it's not a great album) but definitely satisfying, fun and entertaining. Am I becoming too harsh when I'm giving props to 3 stars albums? Heh, whatever but I guess it all comes from the expectation of the release. Like if the next Roots album is 3 stars I'll be fuckin dissing it.

Album de la semaine: Sleep - Hesitation Wounds

Diction's review

@@@1/2

Hey this is pretty cool... Sort of like this year's version of "The Ugly Truth". Once you get over Sleep's terrible voice and awkward delivery, you have some very good lyrics here... This guy really has a lot to say and he's actually quite enjoyable once you're able to get into his style. I wasn't really too sure on my first listen if I could enjoy this guy's rapping for a long period of time, but his content really won me over. The production is sort of dark and paranoiac which brought by comparison to "The Ugly Truth", but also because Reanimator lays a few beats on this and it's also on the same label. Whoever the other producers are, they are pretty good too as the whole album has dope beats and a very cohesive sound that makes the album a complete package and not just a collection of singles. I don't think that just about anyone will be able to get into this album due to Sleep's rapping, he just doesn't have a style that can will please all rap fans but personally I think he's very good and that Hesitation Wounds is one of the better hip hop albums released this year.

Album de la semaine: DJ JS-1 - Ground Original 2: No Sellout

Diction's review:

@@@1/2

Now this is how a producer album should be handled! Definitely one of the better ones released in the last few years, the lineup on this album is absolutely crazy and JS-1 comes through with the dope beats and scratches. While the production isn't very experimental, it stays in traditional boom bap territories but it's very consistent and the whole record... I really like how JS-1 adds tons of scratches on all the songs, he scratches up all sorts of classic hip hop songs and it's quite fun trying to identify where each one comes from. Another surprising thing about this album is how he brings out the best out of washed up MC's, from KRS-One, Chino XL, Canibus, Kool Keith, it's been years since I heard any good material from these legends and they sound just like back when they were good. Perhaps the only slight problem that happens with all producer/featurings albums is the lack of theme, but it doesn't really matter here since pretty much all of the material here is nice. All the songs are pretty straight forward, here's a hard beat and just rap good on it and things will work out. Most albums that are 70+ minutes usually have the "filler" problem but not here, I'm feeling about just every joint on this album which is a quite impressive. I feel like this is the "real hip hop" album of the summer, kinda like Soundbombing II did 10 years ago.

Album de la semaine: Mos Def - The Ecstatic

@@@@

It's funny how expectations change just in a few years... Just 5 years ago, "The New Danger" had the job to follow up "Black on Both Sides" and even if it would have delivered there is no way that it would satisfied all the Mos Def fans... Then add "True Magic" which was close to being terrible, there was just not much hope for Mos Def's future. But here comes "The Ecstatic" which without a doubt is a late career defining album for the Mighty Mos Def, an album that redefines him as an artist. See things have changed here, and it shows that Mos Def as been listening to some different things like MF Doom and Madlib... speaking of Madlib he leads the production team here with 4 beats along with his brother Oh No (2 beats), J Dilla (1 beat), Preservation (4 beats), Mr. Flash (3 beats), Georgia Anne Muldrow (1 beat) and Chad Hugo (1 beat). This is quite an impressive production lineup and there isn't one of them that fails to deliver, the production is thoroughly excellent throughout the album. It's not your typical album either, there's many songs that are short and make you wonder what they are really about... but most importantly the whole thing flows together perfectly and listening to The Ecstatic is simply a great experience. The fans who want Black on Both Sides Pt. 2 might be disappointed, it's nothing like the Mos Def of the Rawkus era and he's never gonna go back to those days... This is more like if Mos Def joined Stones Throw and decided the push the envelope of his possibilities. If you want traditional hardcore beats and hardcore rhymes, this is not what you are going to get and you're better off with the Torae/Marco Polo album. Mos Def was always more the type to try out different things and this time it works out perfectly, it's a great dose of original hip hop that isn't lost in the past. Congratulations Mos Def, this time you've exceeded all expectations.

Album de la semaine: Marco Polo & Torae - Double Barrel

Diction's review:

@@@@

THE BOMB. Quite simple. There is no doubt now that Marco Polo is the #1 boom bap of current times, not necessarily the most innovative producer (actually he's not at all) but as far as traditional east coast bangers there is simply no one that can touch him. Port Authority was the shit and this matches it, quite a feat for an artist right now to drop 2 great albums and truthfully I wasn't expecting him to do it. As far as Torae his album last year "Daily Conversation" was ok with a few good songs, but his performance here is much more memorable and MP's beats really help him to make his style shine more. If you are looking for something that's really original and out of the ordinary you probably won't find it here, this is simply an heavy dose of good ol' hardcore hip hop. The beats are just so damn effective, listening to this is pretty much a session of me head bopping for 45 minutes... a banging beat doesn't wait for the other one, shit don't stop!!! The whole album is great and really enjoyable to listen, it's really refreshing for hip hop to have an album like this released. So if you like Gang Starr, Mobb Deep, M.O.P., Heltah Skeltah, Black Moon or whatever else NY group like that this is an album that definitely must not be missed.

Album de la semaine: J-Dilla - Jay Stay Paid

Diction's Review:

@@@@

Its Its Its Dilla Dilla Dilla *ring* *ring* *ring*

So it's the time for some posthumous material from Dilla (The Shining doesn't count as it was already completed and meant to be released that way) and as expected this shit is pure fire. It's too bad that we can't get to hear the post-Donuts sound, but that's a little too much ask since Dilla is actually dead... More than 3 years have passed since, time really goes fast. Jay Stay Paid is a collection of beats gathered from his 2004-2005 beat tapes, some of them have some added vocals and the whole thing is mixed by Pete Rock. I was hoping for these beat tapes to get an official release, and while this isn't quite like the original tapes, it most definitely does the job and it's quite a good piece to add to his discography. The good news about it is that there is much material left from the beat tapes that is unused so there could actually be 2 or 3 more albums like this coming later on. I guess there's no need to say that the beats here are great, since his death J Dilla has been elevated to legendary status with his name now being put up next to the other great hip hop producers. It did take his death for his work to get noticed, but since that day I feel that there has been a shift in production styles as more producers are catching up on his advanced sound. You cannot expect from this album to create "the future", but even if this material is 4-5 years old, it feels totally fresh and it's still ahead of what most producers are doing. It's really one great beat after another great beat... the only thing that bothers me is some of the guests feel a little not needed, but there's really not much to complain. Who would have thought that a dead producer would release the best hip hop album of 2009?

Album de la semaine: Oddisee - Mental Liberation (Un dernier bon album à écouter sous le soleil.)

Diction's Review:

@@@1/2

I'M MAKING HIP HOP LOOK COOL AGAIN!!!

About fucking time that Oddisee drops a real album, he's been making beats for everyone in the underground for about 5 years now. So he went for the producer/featurings concept that just about everybody is doing lately, but contrary to most albums like this Oddisee also raps on it. What makes or break these types of album is of course the production, and it's not really a secret that Oddisee can drop some dope beats. It's not easy being a good producer in 2009 as you can't just copy what the pioneers did, you need to innovate and be original all while sounding good. I feel that Oddisee really succeeds at that, his beats are a modern take on the hard boom bap NY style as he adds a special new touch to them all while keeping it banging. These beat are some real head nodders, he keeps it heavy and it just sounds great throughout the whole LP and he finishes things up with a jazzy cut which sounds like an Ave.To outtake. Lyrically is doesn't really have any theme, these producer albums never have any anyway, but the guests do a pretty decent job and offer some nice rhymes. But it doesn't really matter since it's a producer album and the production does shine which is pretty much all that's important here. It's definitely one of the better albums like this in a while, and also one of the better hip hop albums of 2009 so don't miss out!

Album de la semaine: El Michels Affair - Enter the 37th Chamber (Un album qui instrumentalise tout les vieux classique du Wu! Check this out)

Diction's review

@@@@

Hip Hop is a genre that has used and abused funk music, it's the foundation and without it the genre couldn't have existed. It seems like every single piece of worthwhile funk has been sampled, but what if we flipped things around here? This is what the El Michels Affair did here, a funk band playing covers of hip hop songs. Not just any hip hop artist either, the whole album features new revamped versions of wu-tang classics. It's about time that something like this happens, even if hip hop draws its inspiration from funk music, the whole funk revival thing would have never had happened if it wasn't for hip hop. What is surprising is how good the whole project is, the group is just re-creating the beats with instruments kind of like how The Roots do in their live shows but it sounds really incredible. They add a little extra touch of details in the songs, but never really too much to detract from the originals and even some of the times it sounds even better than the original instrumental. The group really knows how to use the right type of drums, music would just be much better if everyone used drums like these. The whole album is just excellent, it's not really useless like most tribute albums, this really brings out another side of the songs and it's just really fun to listen to. Anyone that digs funk, Wu-Tang fan or not, should check this out as it is simply one of the best albums of 2009.

Album de la semaine: Big Tone - The Art of Ink (Detroit is in da place! Check this out)

Diction's review:

I did check out Big Tone's debut album "The Drought" around the time of its release, but I can't say that I remember much about it. I'll have to eventually revisit it because this sophomore album is very impressive and it fits right in with the latest hot Detroit albums. Just like J Dilla and Black Milk, Big Tone is a producer/rapper that's from the D and he's got that sound of the city. While he might not be impressive as both, he can hold his own on the mic and he makes quite good beats for himself. The Art of Ink is rather short at 38 minutes but it doesn't contain any filler tracks and it just flows perfectly from one track to the next. I would definitely recommend this to fans of that Detroit sound, I don't think it will get passed its "overlooked" status, but it's one of the better hip hop albums of 2009.

Album de la semaine: Braille & Symbolic One- Cloudnineteen (Je laisse diction vous en parler.)

Diction's review:

@@@3/4

One of the best formulas to make a good hip hop record as been 1 producer and 1 MC for a long time and it seems this trend is starting to take place again. Just look at many of the historic records from Guru + DJ Premier, Pete Rock + CL Smooth, Talib Kweli + Hi-Tek, Madlib + MF Doom up til the recent years with projects from Blu + Exile and Insight + Damu just to name a few, the 1 producer/1 MC is a winning formula most of the time. Here we a have team up of 2 veterans of underground hip hop, Braille has been rapping for 10 years from his solo records to the christian supergroup Lightheaded and Symbolic One has been steadily pumping beats this decade mostly for his group Strange Fruit Project. Both artists are pretty good on their own and the combination of both here feels really natural, Braille just fits perfectly on S1's production style and it feels like both are just made to be together. Yes Braille sometimes raps about religion and god, does that bother you? I think hip hop is about speaking your reality, whether it's about being a pimp, a gangster or a revolutionary, you rap about the things in your life. So to me there's nothing wrong with Braille being christian as long as he shows skills, but really I think his strongest aspect is definitely his sincerity. The "real life" situations he raps about makes it easy to relate to and S1's production is really good too so it's rather easy to enjoy this album. We have here a really strong effort and it's close to being the career highlight for both artists, it's my favorite hip hop release of 2009 so far (but it's still early in the year).
