Album de la semaine: Dudley Perkins - Holy Smokes
@@@1/2
Dudley Perkins offers a nice spaced out trip with his 3rd album released under his birth name. Unlike the 2 first which were produced by Madlib, this one has all the beats handled by his frequent collaborator Georgia Anne Muldrow... While her music is mostly rooted into soul, she definitely shows here that she can drop beats for a hip hop artist without sounding out of her zone at all. It's funny talking about a female hip hop producer, it's more than just a male-dominated area as there is simply no other girls handling beats or at least I can't think of any since Silvia Robinson and that's going way back! Georgia's beats are like George Clinton meets Dilla, I can't really describe them in any other way and there are just a perfect match for Dudley who is already a rapping George Clinton. His subject matters revolve around funk, love, peace, he gets political at times too... but the guy really sounds like he's floating in space, very high on lots of weed. That's cool tho, I love Dudley, I dig his style and he's just the shit. Really nice work from Georgia on the beats too, a good dose of modern head-nodders that are mostly all good. This is probably an album that's just for the people who were already fans of both, but hey I am!

Album de la semaine: La Coka Nostra - A Brand you Can Trust
Diction's review

Well this actually much better than expected. I just didn't believe much in the chances of this collaboration working out... House of Pain are beyond washed up, Ill Bill gets on my nerves with his forced "bad" voice and Slaine is alright I guess but he's not good enough to make a difference. What's surprising is the production which works out pretty well, it's a nice dose of heavy beats mixed with a little bit of rock elements here and there. The whole thing is very cohesive and makes a good enjoyable listen, I just wasn't expecting this. Even Everlast who'd I expect to fuck shit up comes correct, his rapping style is similar to what he used on "A Prince Among Thieves" and "The Platform" guest spots about 10 years ago. Even when he gets his singing on, it just works out fine and fits pretty well with the vibe of the album. Nothing really revolutionary (it's not a great album) but definitely satisfying, fun and entertaining. Am I becoming too harsh when I'm giving props to 3 stars albums? Heh, whatever but I guess it all comes from the expectation of the release. Like if the next Roots album is 3 stars I'll be fuckin dissing it.

Album de la semaine: Sleep - Hesitation Wounds
Diction's review
@@@1/2
Hey this is pretty cool... Sort of like this year's version of "The Ugly Truth". Once you get over Sleep's terrible voice and awkward delivery, you have some very good lyrics here... This guy really has a lot to say and he's actually quite enjoyable once you're able to get into his style. I wasn't really too sure on my first listen if I could enjoy this guy's rapping for a long period of time, but his content really won me over. The production is sort of dark and paranoiac which brought by comparison to "The Ugly Truth", but also because Reanimator lays a few beats on this and it's also on the same label. Whoever the other producers are, they are pretty good too as the whole album has dope beats and a very cohesive sound that makes the album a complete package and not just a collection of singles. I don't think that just about anyone will be able to get into this album due to Sleep's rapping, he just doesn't have a style that can will please all rap fans but personally I think he's very good and that Hesitation Wounds is one of the better hip hop albums released this year.

Album de la semaine: DJ JS-1 - Ground Original 2: No Sellout
Diction's review:
@@@1/2
Now this is how a producer album should be handled! Definitely one of the better ones released in the last few years, the lineup on this album is absolutely crazy and JS-1 comes through with the dope beats and scratches. While the production isn't very experimental, it stays in traditional boom bap territories but it's very consistent and the whole record... I really like how JS-1 adds tons of scratches on all the songs, he scratches up all sorts of classic hip hop songs and it's quite fun trying to identify where each one comes from. Another surprising thing about this album is how he brings out the best out of washed up MC's, from KRS-One, Chino XL, Canibus, Kool Keith, it's been years since I heard any good material from these legends and they sound just like back when they were good. Perhaps the only slight problem that happens with all producer/featurings albums is the lack of theme, but it doesn't really matter here since pretty much all of the material here is nice. All the songs are pretty straight forward, here's a hard beat and just rap good on it and things will work out. Most albums that are 70+ minutes usually have the "filler" problem but not here, I'm feeling about just every joint on this album which is a quite impressive. I feel like this is the "real hip hop" album of the summer, kinda like Soundbombing II did 10 years ago.
