Album de la semaine: Devin the Dude - Waiting to inhale (Some dope south shit!)

Lyrics: 4.0
Beats: 3.75

Devin the Dude has been in the rap game for a long time, he's appeared on countless albums from Dr. Dre to The Roots to De La Soul to Scarface. When you need a good hook you can count on Devin. He's released 3 dope albums so far that went unrecognized apart from his dedicated fanbase. You can always expect some smoothed-out beats with devin just rappin about bein broke, fuckin bitches and smoking weed. Devin has no lyrical abilities, he raps so slow like he smoked too much. What makes him so good is his funny lyrics and his addicting hooks. He's just a regular dude and he's easy to relate to his music. He knows how to pick good beats and simply has the ability to make good songs. He's the only rapper I know that has a love song about his marijuana plant! Waiting to Inhale is a great album to chillout to while smoking some weed and just takin' it easy. Devin is 4 for 4 as far as solo albums goes, he's a truly underapreciated rap artist that should be way more popular considering the quality of his music.

Album de la semaine: El-P - I'll sleep when you're dead (Avertissement: Cet album est très bizarre... for advanced listeners only)

Lyrics: 3.75
Beats: 4.0

Is El-P a rap legend? He does have a great career with influential albums like Company Flow's "Funcrusher Plus" & Cannibal Ox's "The Cold Vein". He did change hip hop music now looking back at it. Funcrusher Plus is the root of all the "abstract hip hop" that came out in the past 10 years. El-P got his own unique way of rhyme blastin the listeners with a rapid delivery of hardcore rhymes. On this album El-P provides some truly chaotic beats, they are loud & distorted with offbeat drum patterns. Everything is blasted at you at a rapid pace, this is a very challenging album. It doesn't really get more hardcore than this. After a few listenings I found the album to be quite rewarding with all the details that are in the beats. They evolve with the song, this is executed with much finesse. This is the best album Def Jux have released in a while and I think it's this is the type of album that hip hop needs right now. Something that will get critical acclaim on an indie label that will reach good sales. I'm proud of El-P for this album, it's as good as his older stuff which hip hop veterans rarely get to do. This is definitely recommended to those who are tired of always hearing the same old same old, El-P is pushing the boundaries of hip hop with some very original shit. I'm ready to call him a legend now, he's accomplished enough to get the title.

Album de la semaine : Black Milk - By Popular Demand (Premier album de ce producer/mc de Détroit)

Diction's review

Lyrics: 3.5
Beats: 4.5

Black Milk is an up and coming MC/Producer from Detroit. He's mainly knowned for being part of B.R. Gunna who produced the last Slum Village album. His track record might be short but he already showed some signs of greatness. He's a student of the J Dilla school of production but he's not a clone at all. He does have a few similarities with him like innovative drums and the constant need to be original. The production is truly outstanding, all the beats are great and they are diferent one from the other. He can go from hard ass beats to clap drums and he seems to be mastering both sides. I can't stress enough how is production is good & original. He's an artist like Dilla, Madlib & Oh No, which still choose to make something that wasn't done before proving that hip hop can still be pushed forward. Black Milk ain't no slouch on the mic either, his subject matter is not the most original but he's got good presence and always sounds tight. If there's anyone that deserves the throne that Dilla claimed for greatest Detroit producer it's definitely Black Milk. This is an album that I highly recommend if you are looking for a great new artist and I'm pretty sure it will rank high on my year end list.
